He Saved Me
Taken from Seeking to Better blog.
بسم الله و الحمد لله والصلاة والسلام على رسول الله
Early this year, and until quite recently, I really wanted something. And I mean really. To the point where my thoughts were consumed by this thing on a daily basis.
I couldn’t see passed it. I dreamed, pondered, fantasized, and desired and fretted over this thing to an unhealthy point. I couldn’t understand why I wasn’t getting what I so badly wanted! I should’ve known better, but I began to question my duas and why Allah (SWT) didn’t seem to be answering them. But He did – in the most amazing of ways.
Without giving me the thing that I so badly wanted, he exposed me to it. He gave me a different perspective of that thing, without placing it in my hands. At first, I found myself wanting that thing even more but inevitably, my eyes opened. I began to see the truth – truth which I had convinced myself didn’t exist.
I began to form my own personal viewpoints of that thing and came to one conclusion: Allah (SWT) saved me. He saved me in many ways; He saved me by not giving me the thing I had so desperately wanted. I can see now that if He did, it wouldn’t have been good for me. He saved me by enhancing my awareness of that thing – by providing a window into a world that I didn’t know existed.
He took care of me by not giving me what I asked for and on top of that, showing me why. SubhanAllah, how merciful. How often do we come to understand why our duas aren’t answered (at least in a way we can perceive)?
I cannot describe how much this thing had consumed me and yet, in the most subtle of ways (He is Al-Latif after-all), Allah (SWT) unraveled my heart from desire’s grasp and opened both my eyes and my mind.
The whole situation brought me closer to Allah (SWT) and I developed a stronger sense of understanding of the following verse because I had lived it:
“…But perhaps you hate a thing and it is good for you; and perhaps you love a thing and it is bad for you. And Allah Knows, while you know not.” (Surat Al Baqarah, 2:216)
How true are the words of our Lord!?
I know for a fact that Allah (SWT) saved me from so much turmoil. And subhanAllah, He saved me in a way that fit my personality. You see, I’m the type to not be convinced of something unless I see or experience it for myself. And that’s exactly how Allah (SWT) saved me. SubhanAllah, He put the answer right before my eyes. And what’s even funnier is that even though it was in front of me, it still took me a while to see that answer! How unaware are we as human beings? SubhanAllah. Just think of all of the times that He has saved you…
And Allah (SWT) knows best.
